my buddy Ted at work periodically loans me a stack of DVDs. usually they're great films from the 70's and early 80's and this recent pile included Pacino classics, Serpico and Cruising. anyway, once in a while i get the urge to sketch during a flick and this is the result!

I recently picked up a Wacom Bamboo Pen and this is my first real attempt at using it. the under-drawing is the sketch i posted yesterday but everything else you see here was created entirely on the computer using photoshop and the Bamboo Pen--basically i just inked it and added some shading and a bit of color and texture. i've got a long way to go before i feel comfortable using the stylus/pen but i figured i should get with the program since most self-respecting digital artists use 'em these days.

I havent done any color work in awhile. instead I was furiously trying to improve my line art and sequential storytelling (to no real discernible gain, monetary or otherwise!) but nowadays its hard to find the time even for that. I will find the time for paying gigs tho and i have that now, and its for color work! so, armed with the latest PS i'm back at it. i posted this sketch as line art yesterday and today i knocked out a loose quick (relatively!) colorized version.

so, lots happened since i last posted.

i'm back at school taking a coupla classes. i'm focusing on graphic design this time around. i've always had an interest in clean design and figure it cant hurt my job prospects. in order to facilitate that i've returned to Barnes & Noble in a part-time capacity. i'm not a fan of the retail enviroment but working at a bookstore isnt so bad and i've been on and off with B&N for over a decade now.

at the moment i'm in the middle of another strip. this one is a 4 pager for a Strontium Dog fanzine over in the UK. its called Dogbreath and i'm not sure that it'll be available in the US but i enjoyed the script and its fun to draw.

its also the first work i've done since getting some "constructive criticism" from a former editor/aquantaince. these days i do all my work in a vacuum, so i look forward to getting detailed feedback whenever possible. but, man this particular phone call was kinda brutal. i've been doing some more super-hero stuff recently in hopes of generating ANY RESPONSE from the message boards i frequent. apparently i shouldn't bother drawing that stuff because it makes it look like I CANT DRAW. i should stick to humorous simple line art and avoid anything dramatic. now, dont get me wrong, i've never been a huge super-hero kinda artist, but to be told that i cant draw muscles and clean lines is a tough pill to swallow, esp. if you wanna work in comics. so, i dont know...it bummed me out.

anyway, this particular pic is loose pencils with the blacks spotted. its not the finished page and is obviously rough. blah...

Wolvie vs Hellfire Club Goons

one of the first collected trades i ever read as a kid was the Uncanny X-Men: Phoenix Saga. Claremont & Byrne in their prime! the classic new x-men kicking ass and being kicked AND Wolverine tearing dudes up while covered in sewer-muck. this was back when Wolvie wasnt totally overexposed and played out, so it was extra special and brutal.

i'm trying to draw more super heroes and comic booky stuff these days and the image of Wolverine decimating a squad of goons was first and foremost. i also have a classic X-Men group portrait in the pipeline, but this sucker had to come first. drawing this stuff compelled me to seek out my old boxes of comics, stuff i havent looked at in over a decade AT LEAST. i pulled out all these old comics, among them were: GI JOE, UNCANNY X-MEN, KITTY PRYDE & WOLVERINE, PUNISHER WAR JOURNAL, and way too much crap from IMAGE (gawd, i wasted alot of $$ back then!)i wonder how many more times i'll look at 'em after i put 'em away again? will they just sit and collect dust?

anyways, this pic is the spotted blacks, so its ready to be inked and finished. i'm quite happy with it. i chose to depict Wolvie in his BROWN 80's costume, even tho the time period calls for his Yellow 70's get up. ah well maybe i'll do an alternate version.

NIN Summer Tour

Nine Inch Nails is touring the US this summer and i got tickets baby! good 'ole Trent made pre-sale tickets available to fan club members this past week and i was able to get my grubby little hands on General Admission Floor tix in Worcester MA.

its been awhile since i've been amongst the sweaty writhing mass in front of the stage, but for NIN, its well worth it. back in '94, pushing and shoving and trying to stay upright in the muddy mosh pit as NIN tore open Woodstock '94 was pretty insane. i remember being square in front of the stage and leaping to look back at a SEA OF PEOPLE and thinking that image would stick with me for long time. in '05 when NIN toured in support of With Teeth, Rick, Julia and i had 5 row tix at the Orpheum Theatre in Boston but it was seated, which was kinda lame!

i'm currently at work on a 6 pager for another British Anthology this one is from Accent UK. i contributed a pin-up to their most recent offering ROBOTS and was quite impressed with the book. you can see more at their website.

i came across the loose pencils for BROKEN #2 (all 8 of them!) and i was pleasantly surprised how good they looked. its been close to 2 years since i dropped the project, but i still hold out hope that one day the story will be completed (in some form or another!)

anyway, i was compelled to revisit the central characters again and i did so last night. this is the sketch i finished, sort of a look at Tronik and Adam, 2 years later...

i dont have much time to get these done, so the pix are never quite what i see in my mind, but its nice to take a drawing all the way to inks and be relatively happy with the results. i would love to add some tones to these but i doubt i'll ever find the time...

Nine Inch Nails has released their latest "album" THE SLIP completely free online! its pretty cool, kind of an exploration of all the facets of the NIN sound over the years. highlights include: Head Down, The Four of Us are Dying, Lights in the Sky and Discipline. Reznor recently fulfilled his contract with Interscope and is now completely independent, and its done wonders for his creativity-- 3 albums in the last year!

also, if you havent seen IRON MAN yet, i highly recommend it. its supplanted SPIDERMAN as the best comic to film adaptation imho. Robert Downey Jr was born to portray Tony Stark and the rest of the cast is uniformly excellent. John Favreau has crafted a funny, action-packed summer blockbuster thats even got some touching moments AND it features some of the coolest freakin tech ever. bring on the sequel!!

This past weekend I managed to drag my buddy Carl down to Manhattan for the 3rd (i think) annual NY Comic Con. I wanted to hit up some editors/publishers in hopes of gaining a few more contacts to send work to, as well as see some friends who were attending.

while i wasnt completely succesful (Con floors are pretty much a no go for portfolio reviews/perusal) i did manage to bug Brian Wood, Will Dennis and Jonathan Vankin. all of 'em work for Vertigo/DC and they were pretty friendly guys if a bit harried. we also stopped by the Archaia Studio Press booth to say hello to Mark Smiley. Mark was great to chat with as usual. hopefully i'll see him again at Free Comic Day (May 3rd!) for our annual drinking session with the crew over at DJ's Comics.

so, 100 Bullets is done. you can see the finished pencils over at my comicspace site, just click here . the response from the editor was def positive so i'm now trying to capitalize by immediately working on another set. this time its HellBlazer. loose pencils of ALL THREE pages are posted.

the Demons chasing Constantine have been in a state of flux all thru the sample and it wasnt until the third page that i think i nailed down what i want them to look like. now i'll have to adjust the panels accordingly (mostly page 2, panels 3 & 4).

i had hoped to finish this much quicker, and would have if not for an appearance by an old friend!
i happily put the art aside for a bit to hang out and then household chores kept me from getting back to it immediately. i know, excuses, excuses...

Breaking Bad

I just watched the first 3 eps of this show on AMC and its pretty freakin' great. Very dark but quite humerous with very nice production values and good acting. Its the creation of an Ex-X-Files guy, Vince Gilligan. AMC is putting out some quality Tee Vee what with this past summer's Mad Men. I say check it out.

my buddy Rafer creates a comic called PLASTIC FARM. hes been doing it for quite awhile now. when i met him at an indie con in Ithaca NY back in '03 he was already 4 or 5 issue in i think. its been awhile...

so, yeah, umm...i recently moved back to CT from NY and my life has been kind of upside down since then. started a new day job thats got me working 40+ hours a week, my wife Julia is pregnant and Layne has entered the "terrible twos" a little early. all of these things conspire to keep me away from the boards.

anyways, i did managed to get under the 'wheel of time' calendar deadline with this pic. it features Rand, Min, and the Forsaken Semirhage and was inspired by a very cool chapter of the latest book 'Knife of Dreams' which is # 11 for those of you who are keeping track. the novel started a bit slow, but ended up being quite enjoyable and finally wrapped up a few sub-plots, which had seemed to drag on far too long. it also gets points for featuring a number of kickass battles, as well as finally giving Rand more brutally effective One Power weapons. one word; Deathgates. BADASS!

just finished up the story portion of my JHZ contribution, and i now hafta create a faux cover. heres a blue line sketch that may or may not develop into anything. i gotta admit that i'm drawing most of my RAT reference from Frank Quitely's masterful WE3. the man is a god among men when it comes to drawing skillz i gotta say! re-reading that story recently i was also
much more aware of the great writing from Grant Morrison. its a very emotional story at its core and is good one to recommend to yer girlfriend/wife/whatever. its also apparently in development as a film but then, most stuff in print these days is so...

btw-- i highly recommend KNOCKED UP. it is a freakin hilariously excellent movie from the people that brought us FREAKS & GEEKS, as well as THE 40 YEAR OLD VIRGIN.

Paintball

had a blast playing paintball this past weekend with Brian, Tim, Jon, Jim and a bunch of other folks. it was new field we hadnt played on before and we had some reservations about the strict rules posted on the website. in the end, there was nothing to worry about, as we practically had the fields to ourselves. it got to the point that during our breathers between fullscale games we were back to back, walking off ten paces, turning and firing! there was talk of a 'Zombie Master' game but it never materialized, ah well maybe next time. either way i should have worn a thicker long sleeve tee, cause i had some serious welts/bruises when the games were all over.
pictured, is some bruising on my upper arm 2 days later and thats repeated in numerous other places all over my body. dont worry tho, i gave as good as i got, just ask Erzen and Tim.

these past few weeks have been really busy for me, so i havent had much time for posting sketches and stuff. among other things i'm currently at work on 2 short stories that'll be appearing in a coupla books sometime soon. the first is Jesus Hates Zombies; an anthology of various stories featuring a zombie killing Jesus! the second is another anthology, this one titled Licensable Bear TM and it features a cute adorable "bear" in a quest to promote/represent just about everything.

saturday may 5th was 'free comic day' and i spent it hanging out with the guys down at DJ's Comics in wallingford. Mike, Sir Jon, Nukilwa, Mark, and the other Mike we should def do it again next year! a good time was most certainly had by all...

Watchmen

i just finished re-reading Watchmen. its been quite awhile since i first read it (early '92 i think) and while it didnt have the emotional punch that i remember experiencing at the time ( i actually teared up a bit while reading Dr Manhattan's origin), it still stands as one of the greatest comic series ever.

Alan Moore's writing is just so good on it! all the elements that go into the series are handled so deftly; the characters themselves and the world around them, the present day (1985) investigations into the Comedian's death, the history of the costumed hero craze thru its inception to its demise (1938-1977) , the ongoing strip of the Black Freighter and of course the news articles and book excerpts that end each issue, by filling in crucial background details.

Dave Gibbbons artwork is a perfect fit for Watchmen.
my first reaction to his work was "meh", it was the early 90's and IMAGE Comics was bursting onto the scene and i just wasnt impressed by Gibbon's rigid paneled pages. i mean, the guy fit 9 panels on almost every page! at the time i was far more interested in giant full-page spreads or characters breaking out of their borders. now i have a much greater appreciation for what Gibbons has done. what he is able to fit onto these pages, into those tiny rectangles, is really fantastic and when he does use an entire row or even half a page for one image, it is EPIC.

Moore's writing coupled with Dave Gibbons excellent art tells the story so well that if you are really paying attention to every detail the ending should almost come as no surprise. if you havent read WM in awhile def do so, and if you've NEVER read it i highly recommend that you do!

i'd be remiss if i didnt mention that after all this time its actually going to be a movie. i'm not quite sure what to think about this. on one hand i say leave it alone, theres no way that the story wont be compromised in its transition to the screen, on the other, it has the potential to be one of the coolest superhero films ever. you can see some info on it here . in the end i'll always have the graphic novel and i'm sure i'll revisit it.
